You’ve probably heard of HDD and SSD. These are a type of computer hardware. These are called storage devices. These devices are used to temporarily or permanently store data on the computer. This device can be internal, external or portable. Sometimes these devices may be connected to the network.
Hard disk drive is the full form of HDD. It is a type of magnetic storage device. From the word hard disk it is understood that there is a relation between disk or disc. Opening the aluminum cover of a modern hard disk reveals that several disks or discs are arranged in several layers. Which are called platters. All information is written to the platter via a magnetic head. Each disc tends to be very thin. The number of discs determines the total capacity of the hard disk. And the features are similar to the name because the discs are quite stiff. Each disc is attached to a powerful motor so that it can rotate at much higher speeds simultaneously. A lot depends on this rotation. One of the important ones is the data transfer rate. That is, the higher the rotation, the faster the data transfer. The unit of measurement of this rotation is rpm or revolutions per minute. Typically the amount of rotation on current hard disks varies from 4,200 to 15,000 rpm, depending on the hard disk.
What is SSD?
The full form of SSD is solid state drive. It is a type of flash memory device. These are much faster and more expensive. SSD’s way of storing data is completely different from HDD’s. It has no mechanical part, it is completely electronic. The SSD has a NAND flash memory chip inside. Data is stored in this memory chip made by Silicon. And this chip is controlled by flash controller. Data is stored by the controller in the memory chip. The ability to read and write SSD data depends on the power of the controller.
In general, SSD is far ahead of HDD in terms of performance. This is because the controller is used to read-write data in SSD. Which can quickly read-write data from HDD. Also all the information is stored together in a flash memory. This allows it to read very quickly when searching for information. On the other hand, in HDD, read / write head is used to re-write the information in the platter. Information is scattered randomly in HDD. When searching for any information, the platter rotates and the information is read randomly with the head. So it takes time. Sometimes a lot of clusters accumulate on the platter, which if not maintained properly causes it to slow down.
HDD is far ahead of SSD in terms of price and capacity. A terabyte HDD can be bought for just a few thousand rupees. Again you have to spend ten to thirty thousand rupees to buy a terabyte SSD. Moreover, 8 terabyte HDD is easily available in the market. But terabyte SSD is not easily found in the market.
It should be considered as required before purchase. HDD should be used if more data needs to be stored. Because, high capacity SSD is not yet available in the market. And even if it is available, it has to be bought at a very high price. SSD should be used if you do not need to store more data. Again, HDD and SSD can be used together if desired. In this case SSD should be used only for operating system. And HDD has to be used for data storage. The operating system will work much faster. Games will take less time to install and load. Code editors and IDEs will take much less time to launch. However, for the average user, loading the operating system much faster is a big deal.
